I'm guessing that you saw a plant tag on a spider plant advertising the plant's ability to "purify the air"? That's mostly just a marketing scheme used to make you think that spider plants have some extra powers that other plants don't have, but it's not true. I've seen that same kind of statement on tags for all kinds of plants.

All plants purify the air by removing volatile organic compounds, which the plant uses in its regular metabolism, and the removal of VOCs means cleaner air. Having houseplants can have a measurable effect on the concentration of VOCs, so to say that a plant purifies the air is definitely true. And it's reasonable to think that different plants use more VOCs than others, but I can't find any evidence to say that spider plants are actually better at purifying air than any other houseplant.

NASA found that the spider plant is especially good at removing formaldehyde, and can also remove xylene and toluene, though it is not in the "top 10 list". To be effective "air cleaners" it is necessary to use 1 potted plant per 100 square feet of home or office space.
