A shooting star is a meteor moving fast enough through the air to create heat and light of its own. But if space is a vacuum, what air is there for it to cause the friction to create heat and light?

answ2. Shooting stars are meteors, alien bits of rock etc that mill around in the cosmos. When they enter the atmosphere, their descent speed is sufficient to heat them to incandescence (well the small ones anyway).

They also come in groups which appear to point to a region of the sky, hence e.g. "the Leonids" which appear to come from the Leo zodiac grouping.

They are possibly the remains of a long-gone body that broke up in its cosmic passage, and bits of it are still falling along the original trajectory - hence The Leonids. There are a number of groupings. When the earth in its annual rotation round the sun passes through this old path, it meets a few of the pieces of debris on each passage.

When they hit the Earth, they are called meteorites.

To draw a shooting star, start by creating a curved line to represent the falling trail. Then, draw a small circle at the top to depict the star. Finally, add short curved lines to show the motion of the star falling through the sky.
