How do you handle an unknown chemical?

Very carefully. Obviously, this substance should or is not expected to be where it is and any nearby people have little or no training in handling such substances. If you think it might be hazardous, call the fire brigade and alert them to the fact that there is a chemical spill of unknown quality and where it is, as well as a description of the substance (any colour or smell, whether it is solid, liquid or gaseous, how much there is, where it is coming from, etc.). * Make sure that no ignition sources such as flames or electrical devices are near the substance; * keep children and pets away from it; * if it is liquid and flowing to a drain, use sand or soil to block the flow; * if it is a gas, evacuate the area; * if it begins burning, again, use sand or similar things to try and smother it or a carbon dioxide or powder extinguisher - water and other lquids can easily make the fire worse; * where possible, move vehicles away from the substance (so that HAZMAT services can access it and to prevent any unnecessary property damage). Those last few are especially important for large spills, while the first are generally to be folllowed as safety precautions.
