To replace underfloor ducts, you will first need to remove the old ductwork by disconnecting it from the heating or cooling system. Then, measure and cut the new ductwork to the appropriate size before installing it in place of the old ducts. Finally, make sure to properly seal all connections to prevent air leakage. It is recommended to consult a professional for this task to ensure it is done correctly.

Having ducts in the ceiling of your home can lead to uneven heating distribution as hot air rises, leaving the lower levels of your home cooler. It can also make it harder to access and maintain the ductwork for repairs or cleaning. Additionally, leaks in the ducts can occur over time, leading to energy inefficiency and increased heating costs.
One disadvantage of having heat ducts in the ceiling is that it can lead to uneven heating distribution, as heat naturally rises. This can result in warmer temperatures near the ceiling and cooler temperatures at the floor level. Additionally, maintenance and repair of ducts in the ceiling can be more challenging and costly compared to those located in the floor or walls.

There are lots of reasons this may be true. I suspect the biggest reason is that somewhere on that floor is the heating and cooling equipment, water heating, etc. and the ceiling height is necessary for that equipment. If this is true then you also have the bulk of your ducts, water pipes, etc. in the ceiling of the ground floor and these are often run between an artificial drop ceiling and the actual structural ceiling.
