They cannot be made by humans. They take billions of billions of joules of energy to make a small one. Volcanoes are made by Earth plates colliding. I won't go into too much detail but this causes magma to leave the mantle. The way it leaves depends on the type of volcanoes. Shield or constructive. Shield volcanoes emit lava which trickles away, this is not dangerous and can be avoided. Constructive is dangerous and explosive, emitting tonnes of ash. Volcanoes are also made by the earth's plates moving apart leaving a hole for molten to come up, creating a volcano.
