Actually, these rules don't have so much to do with the same column as the same metal/nonmetal grouping on the periodic table.
If they are both nonmetals, then you use numeric prefixes on each element or chemical group that is involved, because the number of oxidation states often varies, and the name needs to explicitly state what the chemical bonding is:
- PO4 - phosphorus tetroxide
- P2O5 - diphosphorus pentoxide
If you have a metal and a nonmetal, then you just specify the metal (if it is a transition metal, with multiple oxidation states, then specify the oxidation number) and the nonmetal with "-ide" suffix:
- NaCl - sodium chloride
- Cu(OH)2 - copper (II) hydroxide

182 I don't think there are compounds in the periodic table. As far as I know the periodic table contains only elements, compounds are formed by ionic/covalent bonding which is another story already. http://www.webelements.com/
A vertical column is called a 'group.' A horizontal row is called a 'period,' thus the periodic table.
Periodic table contain only chemical elements not compounds.
First off, there is no "salt" on the periodic table of the elements. Salt is a compound. However, you may be talking about "sodium". If that's the case, sodium is NOT in the same column as oxygen in the periodic table. Sodium is in the first column while oxygen is in the sixteenth column.
Representative elements
Water is a COMPOUND of two(2) elements, viz. Hydrogen(H) and Oxygen(O). These tqo elements are both found in the Periodic Table. The Periodic Table is a list of ELEMENTS, not compounds.
groups
A group in the periodic table is a column of elements that share similar chemical properties due to having the same number of electrons in their outer energy level. Groups are vertical columns and are numbered from 1 to 18.
iDkkk Lmaoo !!
A group of elements.
Water isn't on the periodic table as it is a compound and only elements are on the periodic table
