How do you polish a brass ornament?

Remove discoloration and stains with either Brasso or Nev-r-dull products, rubbing until brass is bright and shiny. Remove their oily residue with alcohol and air dry. Spray with clear lacquer or clear enamel to prevent re-oxidation.

Well Depending on the size of the brass item.....A faster way is to get a plastic container with a secure lid that the brass item will fit into...drill two small holes in the plastic lid ,then suspend the brass item at each end by attaching a string and tying it together through the holes in the lid so that the brass item is suspended in the center of the container (not touching the bottom or top).

then pour 1 cup of household bleach into a small container like a bowl and set the bowl in a corner of the bottom of the large container,then place the lid with the brass item suspended to it on the container and secure the lid.....

The fumes from the household bleach will begin to tarnish the brass making it appear older,depending on the size of the brass item this may take a few minutes or a few hours to get to the desired color.

Make sure you do not place the brass item directly over the container of bleach or you will have one spot much darker than the rest of the item....

When you have the color that you desire remove the item and rinse it in water to wash off the remaining bleach.....(and properly dispose of the used bleach)

If you prefer the brass item to appear extreemly old then allow it to turn almost black in color,then take it out and rinse it in water,dry it off and let it set for an hour and then buff the brass item by hand with a cotton cloth to get the color depth and variations that you desire...

After you have buffed the brass and achieved your desired color you can also pit the brass in various areas as well to give it a weather look,simply take a small paint brush and brush on some bleach and allow it to remain until the metal turns black and pits then rinse and rebuff the area to blend it with the rest of the color....pitting the brass may require numerous applications and can take several hours or even a few days to properly pit the brass depending on the type of brass the item is....

All of this should be done in a well ventilated area outside the home, concentrated bleach fumes are hazardous.....
