kickstart doesnt use wire to start up, thats for an electric start, you only need the battery for things like an electric start, lights etc
That is potentially dangerous and should never be done. See an electrician about this problem.
Wire size is based on the current draw of the device. It can be obtained from the wattage of the device by dividing the watts by the voltage. Once you have the current re ask the question.
The only time that the white wire needs to be re identified is when it becomes a "hot' current carrying conductor. It should be done in three and four way switching, good electricians will but with DIY home owners it usually doesn't happen. Another location it is mandatory to do is on 240 volt heating when using a two wire, black and white cable. The white must be identified as "hot" to ground. This is becoming less of a problem as wire manufactures are producing two wire red and black cables just for electric baseboard heating loads.
eHow is a great resource for topics like this, with articles like "How to Re-Wire a Lamp," "How to Rewire a Lamp with a Rotary Switch," "How to Rewire an Old Lamp," and "How to Wire a Floor Lamp."
No, there are different occasions when the red of a three wire cable gets used as a hot wire. There also times when the white wire gets used as a hot but has to be re identified as a hot with marking tape. When wiring baseboard heaters the cable used is red and black with no white wire in the set.
