How to remove black mold from a pool

Black mold is pretty hard to get off. Chemicals at first are useless because the mold is growing under a hard shell that must be scraped or ground off. Once the shell is off the chemicals can do their job and kill the problem.

There are two methods for the removal of black mold.

First method.

Pool is full of water.

1. Use a wire brush and scrub the mold as hard as you can. (DO NOT DO THIS WITH A LINER POOL)

2. Shock the pool with 1/3 more than the required amount of shock treatment.

3. Scrub the walls and floors with the wire brush again.

This should take care of the mold. In some extreme cases you will need to rub a large chlorine tablet (hockey puck size) directly onto the mold covered area. Use the puck to grind away and kill the mold at the same time. Be sure to wear chemical proof gloves and not dish gloves. Once the surface is free of mold, run the pump and filter long enough to turn the water over two times (typically ten hours). After cycling the water it will be time to clean the filter.

Second method.

Drain and acid wash the pool. This method should only be done by a professional pool service company. The fumes from the acid wash are strong enough to cause severe irritation of the eyes, throat, and lungs.
