How does a Venus Flytrap get its food and energy?

The fly trap survive off of flys and can survive without light but this isn't optimal. For the fly trap to survive for a long period of time they have to have a dormancy period every year that lasts three to five months. Without this it will weaken and die. Fly traps can also live through frost and light freezes. Freezes that last an extended period of time can kill a fly trap however.

A Venus Flytrap gets its food by capturing insects, Spiders, and other small arthropods. When prey touches the trigger hairs inside the trap, it causes the trap to close quickly. The plant then secretes digestive enzymes to break down the prey and absorb nutrients for energy.

To gain much needed nutrients, the Venus Flytrap consumes flies by trapping them in their environment.
