Beavers make dams by felling nearby trees with their awesome incisors. Most times, the tree falls across the water, but not always. Then, they cut smaller branches from the felled tree and gather them into what is, basically, a logjam. They are known to create small canals for travel to and from the pool they create. There's alot more to it than just collecting pieces of wood and putting it into a river until there is a wall in the river.

The beavers also construct a dome-shaped home with a subterranean entrance. The entryway usually has two or three sharp turns in it to prevent other, larger animals from entering.

If a beaver builds a dam is that primary or secondary succession?

The beaver building a dam would be considered a form of secondary succession because the beaver is altering an existing ecosystem rather than colonizing a new, barren area. The dam creates new habitat and changes the environment, allowing for new species to establish and thrive.

What is the role of the beaver in its ecosystem?

Beaver is an example of a keystone species because if beavers decrease in a community, there will be no dam that beaver used to build, so the river is going to flow pretty fast. That makes the birds' nesting hard to exist. Also, fishs' population can increase.

Will a beaver pond become a meadow overtime?

Over time, a beaver pond may transition into a meadow if the beavers abandon the area or if the dam is breached, allowing the water to drain. As the water recedes, sediment accumulates, providing a substrate for vegetation to grow. This can lead to the formation of a meadow as the ecosystem evolves.

How has the beaver evolved because of natural selection?

Beavers have evolved adaptations such as webbed hind feet for swimming, a broad flat tail for dam-building and communication, and large teeth for chewing wood. These traits have been favored by natural selection as they provide the beaver with advantages for survival and reproduction in their aquatic habitat.
