The Sun functions by producing energy. This energy is produced in the core of the Sun and is made up of hydrogen. The energy is then sent to the Earth and used for Solar energy which helps living things.

The Sun originally came from clouds of dust and gas in space from the Big Bang. Gravity pulled together the gas and dust which gained mass. When the mass was heavy enough, the heat at the centre started the nuclear fusion with the hydrogen. Thus the Sun was born. The sun began as a stellar nebula left over from a supernova (an explosion of a massive star). This nebula was basically a giant cloud of gas and dust. Over time, gravitational forces caused this cloud to begin contracting. As the dust and gas became denser from the contraction, it also got hotter. It continued rising in temperature in this manner until it became hot enough to support nuclear fusion of hydrogen gas. By this point, the gas was dense enough to be a contiguous fluid ball, putting out incredible amounts of heat and light from the fusion at its core.

That is how our sun formed.
