it takes the earth 24hrs to rotate on its axis and 365 days to rotate around the sun. So the earth has been divided into a 24 hour time zone starting at the prime meridian which is 0 degrees longitude/latitude. Each 15' of longitude is allocated 1 hour in time. Travelling clockwise the time zones are divided in periods of three hours. So when you reach the next time zone after the Prime Meridian there is a three hour difference. For example Sydney at 6pm it is 3pm in Perth.
