Diesel fuel is a hydrocarbon that is composed of a number of different molecules. These molecules are carbon chains with hydrogen bonded onto them. In an internal combustion engine, it will, in general, be injected into the combustion chamber of the cylinder at an "appropriate" time. As the piston goes down on the intake stroke, air is "pulled" into the cylinder. On the compression stroke, that air is compressed by the piston, and thissuperheats the air. Near the top of the compression stroke, the injector sprays a mist of diesel fuel into the highly heated air, and it immediately begins to combust. What is happening is that oxygen in the air is going to begin to combine with the hydrogen atoms that form the hydrocarbon chains of the diesel fuel. This will form dihydrogen oxide, or water (H2O). In addition, that oxygen will, in a way, be "replacing" the hydrogen, and it will combine with the carbon, too, to form carbon dioxide (CO2). There will be another group of partial combustion byproducts from the incompletely burned fuel, and carbon monoxide (CO) is just one. We'll also see some compounds formed when elements other than the carbon and hydrogen are involved. Sulfur is one of the chemicals of concern in diesel fuels and fuel oils. The combustion of the diesel fuel will result in the formation of hot gases, and these will drive the piston down on the power stroke of the engine. If diesel fuel ignites in open air, many of the same reactions will occur and many of the same compounds will be formed. But because of the "open" nature of this combustion, there will be many more partial combustion byproducts, including more partially burned hydrocarbons, which will appear as a thick, dark smoke.
