Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.

The 4th wire is for the ground. Many of the older houses used the ground wire and the neutral wire interchangeably, however the neutral voltage can "float, depending on what else is drawing power from the circuit. Modern 240 V circuits have the 2 "hot" wires carrying the 240, the Neutral wire (typically white) is the "center tap" of the supply transformer, and the ground wire is there to make certain that YOU, or any other operator of the dryer, will not be electrocuted.

So run a GROUND wire to the 4th prong of the replacement plug that you bought at Wal~Mart, or better yet, have a licensed electrical contractor do it for you.

Dryer plug three to four

First of all turn the breaker off that feeds the dryer. Instructions should come with the new cord. Open up the electrical access panel on the back of the dryer. You will see a terminal block with three wires going into it from the plug cord assembly. A red and black and white are now connected to the terminal strip. Look at the position and colours of the existing 3 prong cord and how it is connected. Make a diagram. Coloured wires on the outside terminals white in the center. From the center wire terminal you will see a jumper strap that goes to the frame of the dryer. When installing the four prong plug this jumper is removed completely. The kit should have with it a grounding lug that connects to where the removed grounding strip attached to the frame of the dryer. This is the attachment point for the fourth green ground wire from the new dryer cord assembly.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

What is wrong if you changed a four prong to a three prong and the dryer is not heating?

My question is WHY did you replace a four prong dryer plug with a three prong! 220 volt Electric dryers require two hot legs, a neutral and a system ground wire. Sounds as though you shunted one of the hots or the neutral. You need to install a four prong plug of the same configuration and wire it exactly as the original.

How do you change the plug on your clothes dryer cord from three prong to four?

To change the plug on your clothes dryer cord from three prongs to four, you will need to first disconnect the dryer from the power source. Then, remove the old three-prong plug by unscrewing it and replacing it with a new four-prong plug. Make sure to connect the wires to the correct terminals on the new plug following the manufacturer's instructions. It's recommended to consult a professional electrician if you are unsure about the process.

What if you have four wires running to your dryer outlet and the outlet is only a three prong one wire is just hanging out is this really even safe?

No, it is not safe to have a wire hanging out of an outlet. If you have a four-wire connection but only a three-prong outlet, this could pose a safety hazard. You should have a qualified electrician properly install a matching outlet to avoid any risk of electrical shock or fire.

Should a 3 wire 250 volt drier be grounded?

Yes, most definitely. Provisions for the ground wire in the dryer receptacle should be used. The feeder cable's ground wire is first grounded to the receptacle's junction box ground screw and then taken to the receptacle's ground terminal. The dryer plug configuration will match up to the dryers four wire plug in cable. When the plug is connected into the dryer receptacle the ground terminals of both devices will match and the ground wire will be continuous from the voltage source at the distribution panel and complete the circuit at the dryer. This low impedance electrical path will conduct any ground fault that could occur at the dryer and trip the feeder breaker of the dryer circuit, there by removing the fault current from the dryer circuit.

Can you plug a three-prong dryer into a four-prong outlet or is there an adapter you should use?

You should install a four prong. The older ones were three prong and had no ground. An adaptor isn't made because it wouldn't fix the problem. You could make your own adaptor and cut the ground off with a pair of dykes, but don't.

How can you tell if you have a 4 wire cable installed with a 3 prong outlet?

What you term as a four wire cable is known as a three wire cable in the electrical trade. The ground wire is not counted in the cable set as it is not a current carrying conductor. Turn the power off to the circuit in question. Remove the three prong outlet from the junction box. If you see a red, black, white and bare ground then you have a three wire cable feeding the receptacle. If this is what you see and the purpose of this question is to see if it can be changed to utilize a new four blade recepticle then the answer is yes.

Can you use 50 amp wire and receptacle on dyer?

It's necessary to look at the dyer to see how much current it uses, which should be on the maker's plate near where the cable enters the appliance. If it uses less than 50 amps, a 50 amp cable is all right.
