It is composed of sand-sized grains of quartz, felspar, and other rock particles with a matrix of silt and clay. Scoria is an extrusive igneous rock characterized by a dark color and holes called vesicles. It is similar to pumice, though denser. It is formed when a volcano explosively ejects lava. Gas bubbles form in the lava and are locked in place when it cools into a rock.
