Simple limestone, crushed can be used with sand as a mortar, but it is VERY slow in reacting after it has (moisture) set.
If you use limestone from which the water of crystallization has been baked out = quicklime, then the reaction will take place more quickly, as the quicklime gradually forms new crystal bonds, including some with the sand (=silica).
