Calcium hydroxide, traditionally called slaked lime, hydrated lime, slack lime or pickling lime, is a chemical compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)2. It is a colourless crystal or white powder, and is obtained when calcium oxide (called lime or quicklime) is mixed, or "slaked" with water. It can also be precipitated by mixing an aqueous solution of calcium chloride and an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The name of the natural, mineral form is portlandite. It is relatively rare mineral, known from some volcanic, plutonic and metamorphic rocks. It has also been known to arise in burning coal dumps. When heated to 512 °C, the partial pressure of water in equilibrium with calcium hydroxide reaches 101 kPa and decomposes into calcium oxide and water.[1] A suspension of fine calcium hydroxide particles in water is called milk of lime. The solution is called lime water and is a medium strength base that reacts violently with acids and attacks many metals in presence of water. It turns milky if carbon dioxide is passed through, due to precipitation of calcium carbonate. Cal (slaked lime). The Aztecs discovered that by soaking their dried corn in wood ash, the corn became easier to grind and also more digestible, thus, more nutritious. The same process is used today to "slake corn". This processed corn is called Nixtamal. It is later ground into fine or coarse meal for tortillas or tamales or used whole for making Posole. Our "cal" comes in a 1 pound cello bag.
its when the lime is slaking in its role at work so it is fired

How is lime formed?

Quick lime is obtained by heating (calcining) calcium carbonate. If the CaO obtained is reacted with water it produces slaked lime Ca(OH)2

Is Calcium chloride slaked lime?

No, calcium chloride is not the same as slaked lime. Calcium chloride is a chemical compound made of calcium and chlorine, while slaked lime, also known as calcium hydroxide, is a compound made of calcium, oxygen, and hydrogen. They have different chemical properties and uses.

What are the differences between hydrated lime and slaked lime, and how do they compare in terms of their properties and uses?

Hydrated lime and slaked lime are both forms of calcium hydroxide, but they differ in how they are produced. Hydrated lime is made by adding water to quicklime, while slaked lime is made by adding water to lime putty. In terms of properties, hydrated lime is a dry powder that is more stable and easier to handle, while slaked lime is a wet paste that is less stable and can harden over time. Hydrated lime is commonly used in construction, agriculture, and water treatment, while slaked lime is often used in traditional building materials and as a chemical reagent. Overall, hydrated lime is more versatile and widely used compared to slaked lime due to its easier handling and broader range of applications.
