The alveoli are tiny little sacs with walls only one cell thick, and they fill all but the conducting portion of the lungs.

Think about a single balloon filled with 1 liter of air. Now take 4 small balloons and fill them each with 250mL of air. The same amount of space will be taken up by the 4 smaller balloons as the 1 larger balloon, i.e. 1L, but the 4 smaller balloons have much greater surface area for gas diffusion.

Three ways in which the lungs are adapted for gas exchange?

Many alveoli-increases surface area for gas exchange Thin alveolar wall-allows gases to diffuse easily and fast Thin capillary wall-easy diffusion Inner wall of alveoli-allows gases to dissolve, which they need to enter the capillary

Are roots adapted to take in water because they have a small surface area?

No.Plant roots have large surface area, roots have root hairs to increase the surface area so that large amounts of water can be absorbed easily.

Why do radiators have a large surface area?

Radiators have a large surface area to increase heat transfer efficiency. The greater surface area allows for more contact between the hot water or steam inside the radiator and the surrounding air, resulting in more effective heat dissipation into the room.

Why should skis have a large surface area?

I believe it has something to do with the large surface area resulting in lower pressure on the snow (or whatever your skiing on, if not snow) so you don't fall into the snow.

Why is it important that the surface of the solar panel has a large area?

so it can get more sun

Why is a catalyst spread over a large surface area?

So it is more efficient.

How does the structure of gills allow for the production of so many spore?

large surface area.

Why do gills have a large surface area and are rich in blood?

because in many organisms like fish etc it is an organ for respiration the gills are supplied with capillaries so that the oxygen absorbed can diffuse into the blood it has large surface area so that more oxygen can be diffused in and more co2 can be removed

Why doesn't it hurt so much if you sit on a seat made of lots of pins?

your weight is spread on a large surface area so the pressure will not be as large as if you sat on one pin.

Why is surface area of alveoli in lungs is greater than the surface area of the skin?

The surface area of the alveoli is where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged across membranes. A large surface area enables a greater amount of gas transfer. The skin has two main functions: one is holding all our bits in one place and the other is to maintain body temerature. In the latter role, a large surface area is good for cooling the body but bad for keeping warm. So it is a compromise.

Which cell has the greater surface area compared to its volume the large cell or one of the smaller cells?

A smaller cell has a higher surface area to volume ratio. A reason for this is volume is cubic (3D) and surface area is 2D so when surface area increases a little bit, the volume increases exponentially. And when the surface area shrinks a little bit, the volume decreases exponentially.
