That is quite simple if you think about it carefully. The tectonic plates are giants lumps of rock under the earth and when they move slightly they can create huge earthquakes. Millions of years ago when there was one big continent there was a massive earthquake basically and the continent split up into many smaller ones.

How is theory of plate tectonics similar to the continental drift?

continental drift is caused by plate tectonics

Continental drift is caused by?

plate tectonics

Describe the relationship of continental drift and plate tectonics?

Continental drift is the theory that the Earth's continents have moved over time due to the movement of tectonic plates. Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that describes the large-scale movements and interactions of Earth's lithosphere. Continental drift was one of the key pieces of evidence that led to the development of the theory of plate tectonics.

Explain plate tectonics and the mechansim of continental drift?

Plate tectonics describes the motion of the Earth's lithosphere which brings about continental drift due to convection currents.

What has the author Tina Kasbeer written?

Tina Kasbeer has written: 'Bibliography of continental drift and plate tectonics' -- subject(s): Bibliography, Continental drift, Plate tectonics

Does the term plate tectonics replace the term continental drift?

The term "plate tectonics" does not replace "continental drift" but rather expands upon it. Continental drift, proposed by Alfred Wegener, focused specifically on the movement of continents. Plate tectonics encompasses a broader theory that explains the movement of the Earth's lithosphere as a whole, including both continental and oceanic plates, and describes the mechanisms behind these movements, such as seafloor spreading and subduction. Thus, while related, plate tectonics provides a more comprehensive framework than continental drift alone.

What was the continental drift theory replaced by in 1967?

The continental drift theory was replaced by the theory of plate tectonics.

Does the theory of plate tectonics contain both seafloor spreading and continental drift?

Yes. The theory of plate tectonics is very broad, and it covers seafloor spreading, continental drift, plate boundaries and so on.

How does continental drift support plate tectonics?

continental drift and plate tectonics are two side of a coin. As the continents are interlinked with the plates; so as the plate moved due to conviction current the continents also tends to move causing continental drift. Moment of plates due to conviction current or due to the adjacent plate is called plate tectonics.

What is the name of the theory that supported the continental drift?

Plate Tectonics.
