The Sun is not going to go out. In fact, the vicinity of Earth is likely to get hotter as the Sun swells into a red giant over about the next 4 billion years. The existing climates on the planet should persist for at least another 100,000 to 500,000 years. After that, things may become uncomfortable.

In the short term, increases in solar radiation will first reduce the level of carbon dioxide, resulting in less plant life and consequently lower oxygen. Following that in about 1.1 billion years, the oceans will begin evaporating. The current conditions that favor carbon-based lifeforms will be gone long before the Sun expands far enough to incinerate the planet completely.

Fortunately, the technological accomplishments of the last 1000 years provide hope that some solution will be found to ensure survival of Earth's human and other life, even if the planet itself cannot be spared from its cosmic fate.
