Mariner 10 took around 4 months. The time for interplanetary travel depends on a number of factors. The first is the planets' relative positions in their orbit. Also, the space craft do not travel in a straight lie for one planet to another. Instead, they swing by the moon, or another planet so as to gain acceleration through the slingshot effect. The space craft may spend some time exploring this planet - as Mariner 10 did with Venus - on its way to Mercury.
