About 63% of known bird species have a diploid chromosome number (2n) of 74-86. A further 24% have 2n = 66-74.

Extremes at the lower end of the spectrum are the trumpeter hornbill Ceratogyman bucinator and stone curlew Burhinus oedicemus (with 2n = 40 and 42 respectively). The highest recorded chromosome number in birds is in the common kingfisher Alcedo athis (2n = 132 or 138) or the Grey (or Southern) Go-away bird Corythaixoides concolor (2n = 136-142). Understandably, accurate chromosome counts become difficult with these numbers. [Source: Christidis, 1990, Animal Cytogenetics 4, Chordata 3 B: Aves]

In general, chromosome number in birds is both higher than in most other vertebrates, and less variable. The typical avian karyotype is composed of macro- and microchromosomes, with a continuous size distribution. Exceptions include the falcons and parrots, where chromosomal fusions and other rearrangements are common, and have reduced chromosome number and size variation in these groups as a whole.

Why was Darwin interested in finches?

The Galápagos Islands had finches that once shared a common ancestry. Darwin found that finches on one island had, over many generations, developed and adapted in differing ways to finches from other islands.

What pet store do you find finches?

There are many pet stores that supply finches. You can try Googling pet shops in your area that supply finches, or go to your local pet store and inquire. If they don't have finches, they might be able to tell you about a place that does.

What colors do female finches have?

It depends on the species, and there are too many to list. Female finches are duller in color than their mates, suffice it to say. Consult a field guide for more info on finches.

How many chromosomes are in sex cells of a bird?

The number will be the haploid number for that species but the haploid number will vary species to species. According to the Ensembl Genome Browser (an excellent resource for questions like this) chickens have 31 chromosomes and zebra finches have 33. It is likely most birds will be in that ball park, but you really can't say for sure without looking in each case.
