I hope you can see and appreciate the analogy.
One number specifies a north/south or 'vertical' measurement, and the other one
describes an east/west or 'horizontal' measurement. Each number has a whole
line that satisfies it, and there are an infinite number of points on the line. The
distance between a pair of points ... one on each line ... can be anything between
zero, where the lines cross, to the maximum dimensions of the surface you're
working with.
"60 degrees north latitude" and "30 degrees west longitude" intersect in eastern
Greenland. The distance between them is zero at that place.
There's another point at 60° north latitude (in eastern Siberia) and another point
at 30° west longitude (near the south pole), and those two are about 10,350 miles
apart.
