Newton is a unit of force, kilogram is a unit of weight, so the two are actually quite different.

On Earth, the gravity is about 9.8 meters per second square, which is the same as 9.8 Newton per meter, so the 500 kg. would weigh almost 5000 Newton. Weight is a force, so of course you measure it in units of force.
