Storm chasing is often considered an independently chosen interest. In most cases, you would choose to be a storm chaser and are not hired by anyone or any company to chase storms. Now with that information, chasing in your own backyard could be cheaper than chasing all around the country. Fuel costs, vehicle maintenance and replacement for damaged vehicle and equipment parts is going to cost you the most. Note: You might drive 500+ miles in one day, spending a lot of fuel and food and never see a tornado the entire day - it is a gamble. However, might I suggest becoming a certified Skywarn storm spotter? That is free, provided by the National Weather Service and it allows you a chance to help your community by spotting and reporting significant severe weather conditions. If you are outside of the United States, there are other Skywarn-like programs as well. I recommend you look into it more. I hope this helps!
Most storm chasers, assistant or otherwise, do not get paid at all.
Warren Faidley would likely tell a young, aspiring storm chaser to pursue something else. However, in this regard, his advice should be taken with a grain of salt, as Faidley does not like rookie storm chasers.

No, Benjamin Franklin was not a storm chaser. He was a statesman, inventor, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Franklin did conduct research on electricity and lightning, famously flying a kite in a thunderstorm to study the properties of lightning.

You don't need to take college to become a storm chaser. I do suggest attending a storm spotter class to better understand storms and tornadoes.
