That entirely depends on the plant. Some plants have adapted to grow in wetlands and need to have their roots constantly submerged in water. Succulents (cacti) may prefer to go weeks without water. Then there is an entire range of water needs in between.

A good nursery should have information for your particular plants. Failing that, many colleges and universities have horticulture programs that could give you terrific information that is well suited, not only to your plants, but also in consideration of your local climate.
