During the 100 years of the 20th Century, there were 228 solar eclipses and 229

lunar ones. So over the long term, you can figure on equal numbers, at the rate of

around 7 of each every 3 years.

There are generally two lunar eclipses and two solar eclipses each year. Sometimes instead of one total eclipse, we'll get two partial or penumbral eclipses, but we average two per year.

Of those two lunar eclipses each year, about 30% are total eclipses, 40% are partial eclipses and 30% are penumbral eclipses. Since the entire night side of the Earth can view a solar eclipse, that means that on average, you will see one total lunar eclipse every other year, wherever you happen to live.

Solar eclipses are visible only across a narrow path along the Earth, so total solar eclipses generally average around a century apart for any location on the Earth. Sometimes one spot gets lucky; there's a 40-mile circle south of St Louis, MO that will see two total solar eclipses 7 years apart, in 2017 and 2024. But on average, total solar eclipses are about a century apart.
