The same way the rest of the bodies in our solar system were: by the accretion (clumping together) of larger and larger particles until it was the biggest object in its part of the solar system.

The trigger event is believed to be the death throes of a passing star, whose gravity waves and radiation pressure sufficiently disturbed the initial gas cloud from which our solar system formed: the central part collapsed, spun up, and began to shine on its own due to the process of nuclear fusion (our sun) while the rest of the cloud either got dragged around it, or was eventually blown away by the pressure of the solar wind.
