The name of the chemical element aluminium is derived from the Latin word alumen; and it is an evidence that the chemical symbol Al is derived simply from the name of the element.

In 1808 Davy proposed the name alumium and after aluminium for the metal; but aluminium was for the first time prepared as a pure metal only in 1825 by Hans Christian Ørsted.
