  1. The planets, including Mercury, 4.6 billion of years ago, as part of the process that created the sun. The sun was formed when gases and other matter left in space by the explosion of a star, called a nebula, were pulled together by gravity. Some of the gas and matter did not become part of the sun, but was in orbit around the sun, and over many millions of years, gravity brought this matter together to form each of the planets.
