A cliff was eroded in 3 different places, this would have made cracks in the rocks, thus making 3 caves. These continued to be eroded until they formed arches. These continue to erode until the arch became bigger and roof collapsed in and left a tall stone pole "stacks"
The Needles have been worn away so that they are smaller than when they started. There had been a forth stack which collapsed in a storm in 1764!
