Typically the "flap" or more commonly called, the deflector is as wide as the plow itself. They tend to be 6 to 8 inches long, and roughly 3/8" thick for most plows. Its purpose to to prevent snow from spilling over the lip of the plow, which keeps it off the vehicles windsheild.
