If the crust was one piece, it would mean that the molten core of the planet had cooled and solidified, meaning that the iron core of the planet was no longer rotating at a different rate than the rest of the planet. This would result in the loss of the magnetic field of the planet, meaning the atmosphere would be exposed to the full force of the solar wind. The surface of the planet would be bathed in solar radiation, and over time the atmosphere would be blown away leaving Earth much like Mars.
