Aluminum sulfate is sometimes used as a flocking agent in pools. When broadcast over the surface of a pool , it will coagulate finer particles of debris such as dead algae into larger clumps that the filter can trap and remove, therefore " Clarifying" the pool. You must be careful in handling this product and I always recommend using an EPA approved Clarifier. The aluminum Sulfate was widely used in the 60's and 70's before commercially manufactured clarifiers were more common.
