The gaseous exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) occurs within the lungs. Oxygen is inhaled through the mouth and nose, it passes through the bronchi, which branch off into smaller airways called bronchioles. It is at the ends of these bronchioles where the Alveoli are, (tiny, pear shaped sacks).
When oxygen enters the Alveoli, it is diffused into the surrounding capillaries (which are one cell thick). It is also in the alveoli where carbon dioxide is exchanged, the carbon dioxide is removed from the blood plasma in the surrounding capillaries, where it begins it's process of expiration (breathing out).

body cells need oxygen, and need to get rid of carbon dioxide, so we inhale oxygen. the O2 is exchanged with CO2 in blood, and then, we exhale CO2. the O2 goes to the cells, and the cells give off CO2. then the blood carries the CO2 to the lunhs, and the cycle starts again.

The function of the respiratory system is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. You breath in air that is rich in oxygen and your lungs move it into the blood to go throughout your body. Then your lungs extract carbon dioxide from the blood and you breath it out.
