The esophagus is a tube that starts in the laryngopharynx and extends to thestomach. It is 25 cm long and lies in the thorax.

The mediastinum is in the middle of thethorax. The mediastinum is divided into theanterior, middle and posterior mediastinum. The esophagus lies in the posterior mediastinum, on theback side of the heart. It penetrates the diaphragm at the thoracic vertebra 10 and then join the upper end of stomach. Its function is to transfer food and water to the stomach from the mouth for digestion.
