In the Scientific Community, Hydrogen is accepted as a non-metal. One of the most common reason's for this is because Hydrogen is a gas (at room temperature). A statement that can invalidate this is, Mercury is a metal, but is a liquid (at room temperature). Experiments that justify Hydrogen's placement amongst the Alkali Metals include very low temperatures and very high pressures, at which Hydrogen acts like a metal, being more electrically and thermally conductive than silver. Other facts that propose Hydrogen as a metal are fairly simple. All alkali metals react violently with Oxygen, forming an oxide, or rust. Hydrogen can be burned with Oxygen, to create Hydrogen-Oxide (Water, Hydrogen Peroxide, etc). To support this even further, rust is a crystal. The reason why water expands when frozen is because it assumes a crystalline structure.
