I have reasons to believe it is a physical change. The appearance is different but the body functions pretty much the same way it would have.
Although, there maybe a chemical change as the body adapts to having one hand. Whether the Chemical change occurs in the body or joint where the hand was previously it still doesnt explain why it shows signs of physical change as well.
