the term compound itself implies that two or more things come together to form a whole new something. elements on the other hand are pure substances.

For instance, take the example of compound words. These are new words that are formed when two words are logically joined to form a new word

eg: cup and board gives us cup-board. (can u see where this is going)

or if each letter of the alphabet was an element, then words would be compounds.

Therefore, a compound is not a pure substance but a mixture of two or more substances to form a new substance. (hope this is rite :)
