Apparently yes, according to experts ... however in the latest Christchurch earthquakes, boiling water has been noted springing up all around it and some of the earthquakes were centered in and around Lyttelton. A strong smell of sulfur was also noted just after these quakes. The experts insist it is extinct but is there really any such thing as an extinct volcano?
extinct volcano
The opposite of an active volcano is an extinct volcano, which is a volcano that has not erupted in a long time and is not expected to erupt again.
The volcano is said to be extinct if it hasn't erupted for at least 10,000 years.
A dormant volcano is one that is just sleeping and it is possible to erupt again. An extinct volcano will never erupt again.
Extinct
The hills between Christchurch City and the Port of Lyttelton are known as the Port Hills. They form one side of the crater that is Lyttelton harbour, which was formed by the eruption of a now extinct volcano.

yes it is an extinct volcano
Suppose you're at an extinct volcano with steep sides. The ground is mostly ash and small pieces of the rock. What type of volcano is this
it's different because a dormant volcano is when a volcano is sleeping but can erupt any time. an extinct volcano is a volcano that's dead. it is very unlikely for an extinct volcano to awaken. the volcano is dead because it has let out all the magma from its chamber or the magma has drifted someplace else or the magma has hardened.
