"The sky" is not an object. The sky is an image. "The sky" is nothing more than a name for the image of everything you see that isn't directly connected with the ground.

The sky was named before anyone knew what it was. Birds are in the sky just as much as distant stars are in the sky... even if the bird is a hundred trillion times closer than the star.

It is usually more acceptable to use the word atmosphere, when referring to the actual envelope of gas surrounding Earth. The atmosphere is what everyone will agree upon what you are talking about, and was a term that was named with intent when people understood it.

The atmosphere does get sparser and sparser (note: I don't like the adjective "thin" in this context) as one examines locations that are higher and higher.

It doesn't really diminish fully to zero anywhere. The falloff is continuous and asymptotic.

A somewhat arbitrary labeled boundary is called the Kármán Line, and is 100 km above sea level. Kármán studied the locations of aircraft flight, and deduced a location at which the best known fixed wing aircraft would need to achieve orbit speed before developing enough lift to support its weight. It really is a bit less than 100 km, but he picked 100 km so it would be an easy to remember number.

What is the part of the universe on which attention is being focused?

The part of the universe on which attention is being focused is typically referred to as the "region of interest." This could be a specific area of the sky for astronomers, a particular galaxy cluster, or even a specific object like a black hole or supernova. By focusing on a region of interest, scientists can gather detailed data and insights about that particular part of the universe.

Which of these options is the best explanation for why the night sky is dark?

The concept that best explains why the night sky is dark is known as "Olbers' Paradox." This paradox states that if the universe is infinite and static, then the night sky should be bright with starlight because every line of sight should eventually intersect a star. However, the darkness of the night sky can be explained by the finite age of the universe, the finite speed of light, and the expansion of the universe which limits the number of visible stars.

If ancient scientists thought that Earth was the center of the universe and imagined the sky as a blanket that covered the planet why did this early model change?

The invention of the telescope showed that the earth wasn't the center of the universe.

How does Olbers' Paradox relate with the Big Bang?

If our Universe were infinite both in size and age, then our entire sky would, by necessity, be filled with light at all times. That it is not is Olber's Paradox -- and indication that our Universe must be finite in either size or age. The Big Bang was a hypthesis that it was finite in age; and every prediction made by the BB that has been tested has supported the hypothesis.

Why is the universe so big - you will never populate it?

The universe is so big and it will never be completely populated because it includes areas that are unlivable. The Earth is part of the whole universe.

What is the difference between sky and universe?

The sky refers to the atmosphere above the Earth where clouds, the sun, moon, stars, and other celestial objects are visible. The universe, on the other hand, encompasses all matter, energy, space, and time, including galaxies, stars, planets, and all cosmic structures. The sky is a small part of the universe that we can observe from Earth.

who placed earth at the center?

At first the Earth was the universe, and the sky was only a part of it, one of its appendages. The idea of us being a small part of a huge universe is a very recent concept, maybe only 200-300 years old.
