It was Copernicus who put that theory forward after a lot of work, and Galileo used it as a model successfully, but neither of them had any proof that it was more than just a theory.

It was not generally believed until after Newton's theory of gravity was discovered and it was found that the Sun is very much more massive than the Earth so therefore it must stay at the centre while the planets being much lighter revolve round it.
