Plasma is one of the four stages of matter. There are solids, liquids, gasses and plasma. Plasma is basically a heated gas, it is heated to the point where the bonds between the electron and the nucleus brake and the electrons are flying much more freely around the nucleus. It is basically a heated up gas to massive numbers. Of course, a certain portion of the atoms have to be ionized (which is achieved by heating the gas up).
