Catholic AnswerMass, or more properly, the Eucharist, is the re-presentation (the presenting again) of the actual one-time only sacrifice of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, on the cross on Calvary. God is eternal, He has no time, time is something which existed inside of His creation, time is a measure of change, and God doesn't change, He just IS. From God's point of view, Our Blessed Lord is dying on the cross, He saw that before He came to earth, He saw it when it happened, and He sees it now. When you are at Mass, you see Our Blessed Lord's death on the cross from God's point of view. It is NOT happening again, you are actually witnessing Him dying on the cross two thousand years ago. Through a miracle of God, it is as if you were standing on Calvary with Our Blessed Lady. The graces of His Sacrifice are thus made present, in the here and now, for you, IF you are in a state of grace, then you receive those graces in Holy Communion. Which is why you should be going to frequent confession, no less than once a month, every week, or every other week at the outside would be much better.

The Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life." (Lumen Gentium 11) "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch." (Presbyterorum ordinis5)

1364 In the New Testament, the memorial takes on a new meaning. When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, she commemorates Christ's Passover, and it is made present: the sacrifice Christ offered once for all on the cross remains every present. (Cf. Heb 7:25-27) As often as the sacrifice of the Cross by which 'Christ our Pasch has been sacrifice' is celebrated on the altar, the work of our redemption is carried out. (Lumen Gentium 3; cf. 1 Cor 5:7)
