Because just like the earth, the moon has been bombarded by meteors for billions of years. The reason you see very few craters on earth is because the walls of earthly craters erode inward leaving a nice shallow depression that is barely noticeable from the surface. The lack of atmosphere on the moon leaves craters virtually untouched other than by other impacts. Erosion occurs on the moon from several sources; solar wind, and spray from the creation of new craters. There is also a very small amount of erosion due to expansion and contraction as a result of the extreme temperature differences between the lunar night and day.

Why are the mountains of the moon jagged?

Because the moon has no light, atmosphere, and clouds to cause weathering or erosion.

Mountains are jagged because the moon has no?

atmosphere or tectonic activity to break down sharp edges and peaks like on Earth. As a result, mountains on the moon retain their jagged appearance from their initial formation through impacts and volcanic activity.

Why are mountains jagged?

Mountains are jagged because that is how they are formed. As they get older, erosion will begin to smooth them out so they appear rounder.

What range of mountains with jagged peaks?

Why are young mountains jagged?

Young mountains are jagged because they have experienced recent tectonic activity that causes the Earth's crust to rapidly rise and fold. This process, known as orogeny, results in steep, rugged peaks and ridges. Over time, weathering and erosion will gradually wear down these jagged features, resulting in smoother, rounder mountains.

What is a Jagged ridge that forms in the mountains?

Arêtes

How do jagged mountains turn into smooth mountains?

Wind and water erosion makes the mountains smooth.

Why are the peaks of the rocky mountains are higher and more jagged than the Appalachian mountains because?

The Appalachian mountains are about 400-500 million years old and have thus been eroded down. The Rocky mountains are very young (they are still being built) and are therefore much higher and jagged as the forces of erosion have not yet had time to grind them away.

How can jagged mountains peaks become more rounded?

Jagged mountains peaks become more rounded by the process of weathering. This occurs as wind and rain slowly eat away at the mountain, removing tiny bits of the rocks at a time until the mountains look more rounded than jagged.

Why do folded mountains have jagged peaks?

Folded mountains have jagged peaks because the layers of rock are folded and bent during the tectonic processes that create the mountains. This folding results in fractures and weaknesses along the rock layers, which can lead to erosion and the formation of sharp, jagged peaks over time.

Why are young mountains sharp and jagged while the peaks of an old mountains are rounded?

because older mountains are more exposed to the elements such as rain and storms which wear down the jagged points. Actually, the sharpness or bluntness of the peaks of a mountain indicates the strength of the rock from which they are formed, and says nothing about their age.

Why the Applatiation mountains smooth and rockys are jagged?

The Appalachian Mountains are older and have undergone more erosion, giving them a smoother appearance. The Rocky Mountains are younger and have experienced more uplift and tectonic activity, resulting in their jagged peaks and rugged terrain.
