Blood splatters leave certain shapes and patterns and spatters determine how the crime was committed. General analysts also analyze documents for fingerprints and forgery, and they analyze handwriting as well as use firearms to determine which bullet fired the gun used in the crime. But some analysts specialize in only certain areas. A handwriting expert uses the techniques he has learned to not only identity who wrote a certain document but what ink was used, as well. They provide reports that show inconsistencies such as paper elimination, page substitution and anonymous writings.

There are many misconceptions when it comes to the crime lab. Shows like "CSI" and "Law and Order" do not clearly show the hard work that analysts deal with. But those shows also do not show the time it really takes to examine the evidence and solve the crime. And sometimes the crime doesn't get solved as it does on TV. In real life, analyzing evidence can take weeks instead of the hour time frame on TV. Also, as you may have seen on "CSI," unlike in real life, analysts do not pour caulk molds into knife wounds to make a cast of the knife. And there are no machines that can identify cologne that a person had on their clothing.

Being a crime lab analyst is a rewarding career. The average salary is around $40,000 a year. Most employers require at least a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, forensic science or biochemistry. Generally at least one year of related work experience is required and most employers also require completion of a course relating to the crime-lab area. A background check is always required.

There was a court case not too long ago where there was no head for the victim, just the body. The unusual part is that the defense attorney wanted jurors who were watchers of TV shows such as "CSI" and "Law and Order" so they could spot the gap in the evidence. Attorneys are using this theory now and calling it The "CSI" effect.
