How fast can Phototropism react on 2 different kinds of plants? Introduction: Phototropism is the directional growth in which the direction of growth is determined by the direction of the light source. In other words, it is the growth and response to light stimulus. Phototropism is most often observed in plants, but can also occur in other organisms such as fungi. Phototropism is enabled by auxins. Auxins are plant hormones that have many functions. In this respect, auxins are responsible for expelling protons by activating proton pumps which decreases the pH in the cells on the dark side of the plant. The acidification of the cell wall region activates enzymes known as expansions which break bonds in the cell wall structure, making them less rigid. In addition, the acidic environment causes disruption of hydrogen bonds in the cellulose that makes up the cell wall. The decrease in call wall strength causes cell to swell, exerting the mechanical pressure that drives phototropic movement. Materials: 2 shoe boxes Plastic Cover (to cover the open part) 2 types of seed · Mongo Seed · Cosmos Seed 2 clay pots Same amount of Loam soil on both pots 250ml Tap water Procedure: 1. Cut one side of the shoe boxes to serve as "windows" 2. Cover the open parts with the Plastic cover. 3. Plant both seeds on different pots with same type and amount of soil. 4. Expose to sunlight both boxes. 5. Water daily with the same amount and type of water. 6. Observe growth weekly and record data.
