There are choices to be made: more coal, more natural gas (much would have to be imported), or more nuclear. Wind may produce useful amounts of power, but is unreliable. So some increase in nuclear capacity will be necessary. In reality this will only replace old nuclear plant which is to be shutdown probably before 2020.

We are all used to "power on demand" which means when we do something that includes electricity, we expect something to happen. We can use "unreliable sources" such as wind turbines etc but just in case that plan doesn't come into place, we should have something else that will generate our electricity (a nuclear power station.) Governments need to do this! Nuclear power is currently the only meaningful technology that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike, for example, solar power where the energy investment equation can be negative when looking at the environmental impact. Until people are ready to give up dishwashers, washing machines and all the other labor saving devices then nuclear power is essential.
