The Woodward-Fieser rules are designed to predict the absorbance maximum of conjugated systems in the ultraviolet/visible region of the spectrum based on the connectivity of atoms withing the system. More conjugation and more substitution tends to give shifts to longer wavelength (lower energy) light. Alkyl groups tend to make the wavelength longer by 5 nm, other conjugated systems increase the wavelength by 30 nm, with the base wavelength set to that of buta-1,3-diene (lambdamax=217). 2,4-dimethylpenta-1,3-diene has 3 alkyl groups. This give 217 nm + 15 nm = 232 nm predicted wavelength, which matches the actual wavelength. 2,4-dimethylhexa-2,4-diene has 4 alkyl groups. This give 217 nm + 20 nm = 237 nm predicted wavelength. The actual wavelength is 241 nm. As can be seen from the examples, this is really only an approximation, and one the tends to deviate more from reality the further one gets from the base structure.

What is woodwardfieser rule in uv spectroscopy?

Woodward Fieser rules are a set of emperical rules to calculate lambda max. in UV spectroscopy theoretically. They can be used to calculate the wavelength of maximum absorption of dienes and conjugated carbonyl compounds.

Steps in inductive teaching?

Inductive teaching involves several key steps: first, present students with specific examples or cases that illustrate a concept without providing the rules outright. Next, encourage students to analyze these examples and identify patterns or rules on their own. Afterward, facilitate a discussion to confirm their findings and refine their understanding. Finally, guide students to apply the newly discovered concepts to new situations, reinforcing their learning through practice.

How do you find a rule?

The answer depends on the context. There are rules for sequences, rules for regression, rules for scientific laws to name a few examples.

What local rules can be established that are in conflict with USGA rules in a local golf tournament?

I can give you two examples. At my golf course, we have to play off cart paths, whereas the rules state a free drop is allwed. Also we are allowed a one club length free drop if our ball is within two club lengths of a sprinkler head (in the line of play of course), the rules of golf state no relief is given.
